How To Cover Up Red Acne - DIY Green Corrector

In my makeup basics series, I discussed about using corrector to neutralize the flaws.

Here I will discuss how to cover up the red acne using a green corrector. OOPS !! Don’t have a green corrector?? Don’t worry we will make one at home. It is very easy to conceal a pimple with makeup.

A simple DIY Green Corrector

You will need: 

• A true green color eyeshadow
• Concealer
•  Q-tip or a Concealer Brush

I used the Light Green Color 

Method:

• Depending upon the size of the acne you need to cover up take small amount of concealer on back of your palm or any plastic palette. If you have few acne to cover up, I advise you to go one at a time to avoid the wastage of product as concealer may dry quickly.

• Take a tiny bit of green color eyeshadow beside the concealer.

• Now mix the two by mixing smallest quantity of green into the concealer and darken as per requirement. You can use a Q-tip or a Concealer Brush or your finger. Stick to the basic rule – for darker red color of acne You need a little extra green color, and lighter red colored acne will require lighter colored corrector. But the thumb rule of mixing green color to the concealer is that the color green should make the concealer green colored. Don’t add too little of eyeshadow that it doesn’t show up and turn the concealer green.

• Woila!! We have our very own green corrector.

Application Process:

• The Most Important point to remember is to apply this BEFORE the foundation.

  

  Red Acne

  
  
• Having them mixed together, now dab the corrector the corrector in a small quantity directly on the tip of the acne. You can use a Q-tip or a brush for precise application.
• Take good care that you don’t move the color out on skin too far away from acne (as this will make your skin look green).

  ( I blended it a little too far as there was some redness in entire area which wasn't captured by camera)

• Now with your finger tip dab the product and push it on the skin and blend it on the edges.  You will notice that the green will immediately take away all the redness.
• It’s time to hide the green colored patch. Apply your regular skin colored concealer on top of this green patch with a light hand. Remember to just dab the product rather than tucking and pulling.Dabbing will make a layer over of concealer OVER the corrector. Tucking, pulling and blending with MIX the corrector and concealer. Use your fingertip for this step.

  Concealer Blended (no foundation applied) 

• Now follow it with usual foundation and set the whole face with powder so nothing moves out of its place.

Last words:

I know people will be very skeptical of using an eyeshadow and mixing it with concealer. But I will urge you to try this once at home. If you use a good concealer, the corrector isn’t going anywhere. And moreover try it out on day a day you are not going out, Who knows you might just like it. For me, It really saved me few bucks, as green corrector isn’t available easily and moreover considering the price tag I would rather stick to using an eyeshadow. And it has never failed me, I wear it often when I breakout and it never gets noticed. 

Notice how the Redness and Appearance of acne has vanished, The tiny hint of green still visible will be washed away when foundation is applied.

Bobbi Brown Corrector in Peach - Product Review

Blessed are the people who don’t have to worry about the darkness under their eyes. And for rest of us there are Correctors.

As I discussed in a post regarding correctors, Peach, Salmon, Bisque or Apricot (or even Pink) are used to mask the under eye darkness. One of the most raved about products in this category is Bobbi Brown Correctors.

Product 

These have very creamy soft texture but edging towards being tacky. In summer or hotter weather conditions it becomes very creamy and in colder weather it is a little tacky. These are thick and have opaque coverage. A little goes a long way. Despite of being thick they don’t tuck or pull the skin. They blend super easily and give a very full coverage. These hide almost all the darkness instantaneously without much product. It really brighten ups the whole undereye area.

Corrector in Color Peach

These are available in 16 different shades, from Porcelain Bisque to Very Deep Bisque. They cover entire possible skin color range. There is one shade for every skin color. For me my HG color is Peach. It is best color suited for people in my skin color range, warm medium tan, MAC NC 40-42. I would recommend trying them first before making a purchase, if possible.

Price

$ 23 for 0.05 oz, Although the given quantity is very small , but a little goes a long way, I have been using this from last 1.5 years and have hardly made a dent in it.  You need very small amount of product to do the job.

Application

Moisturizing under eye area is recommended prior using the product. Brush or ring finger can be used to apply the product on under eye. Then the best way to blend is by using warmth of finger tip and patting the product into the skin. Apply it close to lash line and on the inner corner of the eyes. This is followed by using a concealer on top of it. I like applying corrector and concealer before applying foundation. This is because I never get a concealer of the exact same match as my foundation, applying it before foundation gives more even look to the face and eye area. (If you have a concealer which is exactly the same shade of your foundation you can go ahead and apply it after the foundation). Setting the concealer is the next step. Apply a transparent / yellow tone powder to set the concealer and prevent creasing. I personally like using yellow toned powder for added coverage. I use a fluffly blending brush to this step.

Coverage and overall effectiveness 

This product does an excellent job in brightening up the darkness and neutralizing the blue / purple tinge under eye. For few people this might be just enough and they can apply foundation over it to conceal the peachy-ness. But I like going one step ahead by adding a concealer over it.

Does it creases? Yes, as much as I wanted to say no, but the truth is that all the concealers/ correctors in the world do crease. It just matter of time they can survive without creasing. An average product with crease early and a good product will take some more time to crease. Coming back to this particular product, it creases on me after about 6-7 hr, that makes it extremely effective product.  The creasing also depends upon the amount of moisturizer you use before applying it and the concealer you use after this product. Setting it with a powder is the key. ( will discuss this further in an upcoming tutorial).

The overall effect looks like a well rested, bright eyes.

Price and availability. But if you have darkness like mine, trust me, nothing is better than this product, I have tried so many concealers but this is worth investing in.

All I can say is I will repurchase this product until I die or I find something which can beat its results (or they stop manufacturing it :P ).

MakeUp Basics- Lesson 3 -Color Corrector

Hi,

Color corrector is makeup products which are useful for camouflaging any flaw or unevenness in the skin. No one has a perfect skin, pigmentation, redness, acne, dark circles, birthmarks and scars are to name a few issues. So with these color corrector we can counteract the flaws and neutralize them to flaunt a flawless skin.

What is difference in Color Corrector and Concealer?

Concealers are flesh colored; they match exactly as the skin tone. These are more pigment and concentrated form of a foundation (in a way). While Color Corrector are of different colors, mostly found in orange, pink, purple, yellow and green colors.  

As for functionality, concealers conceal any flaw while corrector will neutralize the effect of the flaw and helps in better concealing the problem area.

The concept of Color Correction is majorly based on Color Wheel.

The Color Wheel Theory:

Without getting into the details of color wheel theory, I would try and explain the concept which applies to color correction.

In a Color Wheel there are few colors arranged in a circle form. It basically has three parts :

Primary colors: Red, yellow and blue. In traditional color theory (used in paint and pigments), primary colors are the 3 pigment colors that cannot be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues.

Secondary Colors: Green, orange and purple. These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.

Tertiary Colors: Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green & yellow-green. These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.

Color Schemes:

There are two types of color schemes:

Analogue Colors: The colors which are placed side- by-side on the color wheel. These are basically hues of same color or two colors. These are not contrasting each other rather they are harmonious.

Complimentary Colors : These are colors which are directly opposite to each other in color wheel. When placed side-by-side they enhance each other and look more bright and vivid. These have maximum contrast.

Use of Color Wheel in Makeup:

• Color wheel can be used in beautifully in makeup by creating different eye makeup looks using these color schemes. Contrasting eye shadow colors with the outfit or by playing safe my using analogue color schemes. Options are endless.
• Second major use is finding complimentary colors for different eye color. Like which eye shadow/ liner colors suit blue eye or which would compliment brown eyes better.
• But the major use of color wheel comes as in form of Color Correction.

Use of Color Wheel in Color Correction

This concept is based on Complimentary Color Scheme. These colors when placed side by side complement each other but when they OVERLAP they counteract each other or as we say neutralize.

The basic colors available as Color Correctors are:

• Salmon / Peach / Orange
• Green
• Purple/ Lavender
• Yellow
• Blue

Salmon / Peach / Orange Color Corrector are used to counteract the undereye darkness. The under eye area has a very thin skin and normally dark circles have a tinge of blue or purple undertones to them. By applying these peachy or orangey color on them will take away the blue/purple tinge. This is by far the largest used corrector. For choosing the correct shade the broad guidelines are – fairer you are lighter shade of orange u will pick , example very fair n fair skinned people should pick Salmon color, Medium color skinned should pick peachy color and darker or wheat-ish complexion beauties should pick orange (or for that matter even pink) color corrector.

Green Color Corrector is second most important corrector. These are especially good for people suffering with Rosacea or red skin conditions. Green color neutralizes redness, so it’s good for any red acne bump. Just apply tinniest amount on top of the acne and blend it with a patting motion, then cover it with a flesh colored concealer or the foundation, depending on the coverage you need.

Purple/ Lavender Color Corrector are good for people with very yellow undertones. Normally people like from South – East Asia have a very prominent yellow undertones to their complexion. These purple / lavender colored correctors are great “pick me up” for these types of skin tones. It overall brightens the complexion. These are even beneficial for covering up yellowish kind of olive bruises.

Yellow Color Corrector are good to cover Brown pigmentation on skin like hyper pigmentation, age spots and sun spots. These are also good for covering Blue – Green bruises on skin and even tattoos.

Blue Color Corrector are used to counteract orange tints in the skin. These can be even applied under eyes for very dark skin tones.

How to choose a Color Corrector and is it really worth investing in?

• Well there is no hard and fast rule of choosing a color corrector; everyone has different hues in their skin and something suits someone and another suits other.
• But generally talking about Indian skin tones having a peachy/ orange corrector is a good option if you have very dark circles like mine. Or Orange / Pink corrector can really brighten up the under eye area of duskier beauties, It will really bring attention to the eyes. Medium and fair skinned ladies who don’t have dark circles to hide can avoid buying these.
• Green corrector is very effective for people suffering with skin redness either as Rosacea or red acne.
• Yellow corrector is not required if you have a concealer. Generally concealers are yellow based and do pretty good job in concealing pigmentation as yellow corrector.
• Rest colors should only be bought under very specific circumstances and or can be completely avoided.

Application Techniques:

• Always stick to – less is more concept. Apply tinniest amount and blend well.
• I prefer using finger tips as the heat from fingers melts the product into the skin and blend better.
• You can even use a small brush like a concealer brush to apply and blending brush.
• Always top corrector with a concealer and / or foundation and top it off with a powder to set it. (will discuss more in future posts)

Make your own Corrector to conceal under eye darkness

Color Correctors or Color Corrector Makeup  are used to brighten up the under eye area.these are either peach, pink or salmon colored concealers.

They have cream consistency and cancels out the blue/ purple undertones of the dark under eye area.

Although there are many correctors available in market like Bobbi Brown, but these are quiet expensive.I personally love to highlight my undereye are as it is extremely dark and looks even darker with the shadows caused because of my deep seated eyes .

When ever I want to get a very flawless look i prefer using my YSL Touche Eclat Pen, Mac studio Concealer and Bobbi Brown Corrector (Yess!! It takes that many products to lighten up my under eye).

But on normal basis when I am just going out, I have a fairly easy routine, that probably doesn't give me extremely flawless under eye but does a decent job. 

Here is an easy " How to make a homemade dark spot corrector"

Products Used:

• Moisturizer
• Garnier Anti- Dark Circle Eye roll on (here i am using shade Light, this step is optional ) 
• Concealer (any concealer u can find, ideally 2 shades lighter that your skin tone, here I am using Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection Ultimate Wear Concealer)
• Pink  and/or coral lipstick ( matte texture, NO shimmer at all, here I am using Victoria Secret Glossy Tint Lip Sheen in Manic Pink and MUA lipstick in shade 1).
• Setting Powder or any pressed powder ( here I am using E.L.F. HD powder )
• A brush to apply concealer (optional) 

Products Used, Along with eyeshadow which I use to fill my eyebrows 

Procedure:

• I apply a moisturizer on my face to moisturize, I prefer doing this as i have very dry skin. I feel that concealer goes on much better is we apply a cream before.

After Applying Moisturizer

• Dot Garnier Anti- Dark Circle Eye roll on. Less is more . It doesnt gives me a lot of coverage, but its good for overall brightness of the look. I blend it with my finger by a patting motion.

Blended Garnier pen , it gives slight coverage 

• On back of my hand i mix concealer and two lipsticks it makes a very pinky peachy corrector. the trick is to add color to the concealer in small quantity because you dont wanna make it too dark when it gets applied. we need it to be a shade lighter than our skin tone.

Three Products

Mixed products, notice the peachy color it has

• I apply it in the inner most corner of my eye and then dot further upto outermost corner and on lids. Then with warm fingers I do patting and blending motion to blend it flawlessly. The trick here is to apply very small quantity and slowly build up as and where required. 

Instantly Brightened the Under eye area 

• After this I apply my foundation to my face and set the under eye area with a setting powder or a face powder. For extra coverage you can even apply powder foundation lightly or any skin tones powder. The trick here is to pat the powder with a small brush let is set for a 30 seconds and brush it off with a big fluffy brush .

With Foundation and Setting Powder and Eyebrows filled
