Dry Hair.. Causes and Solutions

Dry hair driving you insane. Read here what you can do to banish them.

What causes dry hair?
There are lots of factors that can leave your hair dry. While some, like heredity, are beyond your control, others are not, including:
  • Using a harsh shampoo, or shampooing too often
  • Heated styling tools such as blow dryers and curling irons
  • Coloring or perming your hair
  • Sun and wind exposure
  • Chlorine

How can you treat dry hair?
To bring a shine to your dry locks, try these techniques:

Ease up on the shampoo. Shampoos remove the natural oils from your hair. People with dry hair likely don’t need to shampoo every day—twice a week or so should be enough. On other days, either leave your hair alone or rinse it with warm water. Choose a gentle cleanser designed for dry hair, but steer clear of baby shampoo—it’s likely too alkaline and can further dry your hair. When you do shampoo, massage your scalp gently with your fingertips to help stimulate the oil-producing glands.

Have a heavy hand with conditioner. Conditioner can help combat dryness, and the flyaway strands and frizziness that often go along with it. Choose a dry hair product that’s low in alcohol. For a deep treatment, try an overnight conditioner that works its magic while you sleep (with a shower cap protecting your pillow).

Oil it up. At home hot oil treatment can help counteract the dryness.

Be gentle. Dry hair is prone to breakage, so tread lightly. Use your fingertips, not nails, to work in your shampoo. Work out any tangles carefully—don’t yank or pull.

Build a block. Keep damage at bay by physically blocking your locks. Wear a swim cap in the pool and a hat in the sun.

Simplify style. Go easy on the blow dryer, hot rollers and curling irons, and talk to your stylist about gentler options for perming, straightening or coloring your hair. Minimize your use of products that contain lots of chemicals, including gel, mousse and cream.

Beat the breeze. Pull back your hair or protect it under a hat or scarf on windy days. Not only is the wind drying, it can lead to tangles that break when they’re combed out.

Brush lightly. While brushing may help move oil down the strands of hair, it can also lead to breakage. Brush only as needed for styling, and use other methods to combat dryness. Use a wide-toothed comb, not a brush, on wet hair.

Trim on time. Dry hair is prone to split ends, so see your stylist on schedule.

Get healthy. Some people claim that drinking more water, following a healthy diet, exercising and reducing stress can help with dry hair. These steps are worth trying, as they are all beneficial to your overall health whether they help with your hair or not.

Stay Beautiful :)
